My Eulogy

One of the classic messages ever engraved on a tombstone reads, and I quote:

Here lies Max and Max Lies Still.

Anon

Max is a name chosen randomly. Treat any real names as sheer coincidence.

Does this pun make epilogue of Max’s life? Is it that he was such a liar that in his death he still lies or that his is a case of fait accompli in so far as LIFE in Max?

Reminds me of a treatise by Peter Kreeft – Heaven and Hell: A Dialog Somewhere Beyond Death with John F. Kennedy, C. S. Lewis, & Aldous Huxley. On November 22, 1963, these men died within a few hours of each other. All three believed, in different ways, that death is not the end of human life. Suppose they were right, and suppose they met after death. How might the conversation go? Peter Kreeft imagines their discussion as a part of The Great Conversation that has been going on for centuries. Does human life have meaning? Is it possible to know about life after death? What if one could prove that Jesus was God? With Kennedy taking the role of a modern humanist, Lewis representing Christian theism and Huxley advocating Eastern pantheism, the dialogue is lively and informative (Amazon Review). Grab it and enjoy the read …

What is this all got to do with today’s subject – My Eulogy?

It is a chilly Sunday morning (1 September 2019). On this day, I opt to go for Club LIFE – the teen service at Lifespring Chapel, Embakasi. I had promised the team leader, Swaka (a fine young man whose stylish balbo beard cut with a ponytail goatee) that I would attend the service after missing to join with the team earlier in the week. Swaka takes on to introduce me, as he invites me to deliver the message of the Day – Antiheros. Swaka started, ‘ladies and gentlemen, allow me to give a brief eulogy of George”. He said it humorously. Of course, he clarified that he meant my brief bio. I take no offence.

That day, in the afternoon, I was disturbed enough to imagine just what would my eulogy look like? When I am lying still in the casket (please I am not for cremation), and just about to be laid to my final resting, what will the speakers say of me?

Chances are none of them will speak of the wealth that I may have left behind. Nobody will speak of the car that I will have left behind. Truth is, the summary of my eulogy may be, George leaves behind a wife and three children. They may speak of how good a manager I was (never mind in some cases it is only optics). My enemies will be there too. Theirs will be a celebration that one opponent down.

In the bible, there is a Chronology of the heroes of faith in the book of Hebrews chapter 11. It is recorded in verse 38, “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised”. It is likely that the good acts of heroism may not be recognized leave alone appreciated when you are alive, but certainly, you and I will have left an impact in somebody’s life.

LIFE is lived once. Then after judgement – in this world and in eternity. What am I doing right to prepare for this day of judgement? How will men judge me on the final resting day? Far more, what will God judge me of the time, talent, treasure and testimony for the days I was alive?

I dare suggest that whatever you do today is going straight into your eulogy.

A friend of mine once said, every day you are putting together the team and resources to lay you to final rest. When you drive past a forest, one of the tree could be the wood to make your casket!

Let me help you write your eulogy today.
