No Forwarding Address …

I have spent time with 2 friends of mine and the discussions later made me reflect on what really is the substance of life.

First it was Dannoh Danteh in a sermon at Lifespring Church. He asked, “if you knew you only had a few more minutes to live, what would be your last words to God, to somebody you love and to somebody you hate?”

Just this week, I was having a good chat with another friend Samuel Kuria. He was telling the story of his experience at Vic Falls where he did a bungee jump. Other than the protocol of signing of waiver of indemnity and other prep work, he was left with a small detail of handing his wallet and phone to a colleague just before the jump. The interesting part of the story is … all along he had freaked out but when he handed the phone and wallet, he did not give any forwarding address because he knew the rope will hold and get him back.

Death is a mystic thing amongst many cultures. We don’t talk about it and when we do, it is an after thought and often than not, after the event.

Last Easter, I went to visit with my ailing grandmother. Its amazing that in December last year, she was all upbeat and could stand and do a speech. She could recognize us by our faces and our tones. Last weekend, she could barely sigh a word. She has deteriorated in health and strength.
This is one lady I love and cherish. Growing up with guku, shosh, grandma was always a fun thing. She taught us well. She loved us most.

But one thing I have observed in these last days, we can achieve so much in life, yet there comes a time when all that we have will be left without a forwarding address. And I am not talking about leaving a will with details of who is bequeathed of your wealth. Sometimes there ain’t even the luxury of time to say the last words.
Scripture says that we should live circumspectly as though this would be our last day. Let my forwarding address be the LIVES I have impacted. As Myles Munroe said, when we die, let us die empty.
